The 2025 BAFTA Awards nominations have been revealed, and Sebastian Stan has earned a significant awards season honour for portraying the divisive political figure just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration as president and the crucial Oscar nominations.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, widely considered one of the most significant preludes to the annual Academy Awards because of its substantial voting membership shared with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, announced its year-end honourees on Wednesday morning. Ralph Fiennes’ highly anticipated papal drama Conclave led the field with 12 overall nominations, followed by Emilia Pérez, the awards season juggernaut, with 11 BAFTA nominations.

Both films will compete in the BAFTA Awards’ top category, Best Film, alongside fellow nominees The Brutalist (hot off its Golden Globes victory for Best Motion Picture—Drama), A Complete Unknown, and Anora.

Stan’s performance as Trump in the divisive period biopic The Apprentice landed the actor another major awards season nomination, following his prior showing among the Indie Spirit nominations. While the film floundered at the box office, Stan’s work received standout praise—as did supporting actor (and newly minted BAFTA nominee) Jeremy Strong, who plays lawyer Roy Cohn in filmmaker Ali Abbasi’s film that charts the early years of Trump’s rise to prominence on the business circuit in 1980s New York City.

Trump’s staff voiced their dislike of the initiative in May 2024, even threatening to sue the project’s creators.
Regarding Trump, Strong previously told EW, “I hope he sees the movie, but I genuinely do not think he would.”

He would probably recognize a lot of it, in my opinion. Furthermore, I believe that he has acknowledged and even boasted about every aspect of this film at some point. I am hoping he notices. It would be worthwhile just for that.

Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Wicked duo Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, Emilia Pérez trio Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, and Karla Sofía Gascón (who is on her way to becoming the first trans actress nominated for the Best Actress Oscar), and current Best Actress frontrunner Demi Moore (The Substance) are among the other noteworthy nominees among the BAFTA group.

Notable omissions from the BAFTA nominations included Angelina Jolie in the Best Actress category after the Maria star did not make it onto the BAFTA’s previously announced long list, and Wicked in the Best Film category, despite the film appearing in several technical categories and important acting categories.

In addition to sharing a large number of voting members, BAFTA and the Academy usually have the same candidates and winners each year. All 10 of BAFTA’s category winners during the past ten years have received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, even though only two of its Best Film winners—Oppenheimer and Nomadland—have also taken home Best Picture.
