Portugal’s legendary Socialist leader Mario Soares has died at the age of 92.

The influential former prime minister and president died in hospital, Portuguese media reported.

Soares was prime minister twice, once in 1976-8 and again in 1983-5, and served as president for two terms between 1986 and 1996.

Before the so-called Carnation Revolution of 1974 which toppled the dictatorship in place at the time, he founded the Socialist Party and became one of the key figures in steering the country towards full democracy.
